So my brother has a really nasty Scalder army and the only strat I've found with any success is undead heavy magic and just keep summoning dragons. But this is unreliable. Their intangibility makes a missile strategy less viable as you're generally looking at 8-9 auto saves. And in melee attacks I'm taking almost as much damage in the initial attack from his flaming shields as I'm dishing out. Am I missing something here? It seems to me that Scalders have no weakness.

Scalder Intangibility is tough to overcome. Not much you can do about those auto-saves against missiles.

Melee on the other hand is very different. All you have to do in order to be able to attack Scalders with melee, is to put magic saves on your melee army. Those saves stop Flaming Shields. Also note, that if Scalders attack you in melee, they don't get Flaming Shields if you counter-attack. And many Scalder units don't have any actual save icons. IDs do not count for Flaming Shields. So you might want to think twice about attacking Scalder melee units, but a Scalder missile army at melee is just dead.

Far as I know the only magic saves are from Green and Gold? Does this mean I pretty much HAVE to use those colors to fight Scalders? ...doesn't seem like good game balance to me... like if they just had ONE of those abilities I could understand... but having both seems a bit unfair.

There is Open Grave and Evil Eye from Undead. Palsy can help give them less saves.

Yes, it's not always easy to fight Scalders. You don't have to melee them to win, however. If you have blue, then you cast Wind Walks, and just out-maneuver them.

I also have an issue with the Scalders flaming shields. However, it is actually more towards the flip side of the coin. In particular, not getting the return damage on counter attack saves.

I'm sure it was done for game balance, but it seems to me that if a unit has flaming shields, then they have flaming shields. By this I mean they would work on all saves against melee attacks, and not just when they are swung at first.

If the Scalders were made to have this reflected damage on all melee attacks, would that make them too over-powered?

They had that way back when they first came out. It was way over-powered. So now the concept is: attack Scalders, you get burned. They attack you, no problem.
