How often are they played in Tournaments?
They do only one kind of Action, is that not very risky?

I think performing only one action is the very opposite of risk; they are a sure thing.

Problem with items is that the uncommon ones are essentially worthless. Other than requiring less troops to carry around, they average only two-points of icons (1+2+2+3) for two health on a roll as opposed to the one-and-a-half (1+2+1+2) rolled by common items. That means with two commons, you would average three icons per roll -- an entire average point higher than a single uncommon, and it all costs the same.

Thus, the uncommons are only used when House Rules are in effect to increase their power (+1 on all rolls, giving it the same three-point average as two commons).
You may find commons around, tho'. There is the old logic that carrying a one-point shield will pay for itself after its first saving throw.

Off-hand, I'd have to say, I've seen more artifacts show up in tournaments the last couple of years, than the 4-sided magic items. Before that, it was mostly all commons, and of those almost all Speed Slippers. Speed Slippers got to be a lot less useful when charging was taken from the game....

Allegedly, the increase in fun was not proportional to the overpowering of calvary units.

Allegedly...

Calvary became too good, so they took it out. And again, old school people use charging in house rules still. There is also a house rule I use that allows cup cakes to be used as dice. House rules is crazy!

Uncommon magic items seem to work best if you are using just one.
Commons work great in multitudes.
Rares seem to work best if you use the SAI.(also only one)

During the last two years of GenCon, the only items I can remember seeing were Gold Medallions. So, to answer your question, not very often.

Items are more risky because if the army cannot carry them the items are buried. There are only two ways of bringing back buries items: Dwarf magic and the Logo face on the silver medallion. So basically, if they get removed from the army you are down x-health that you have no way of getting back. The fact that they can only generate one type of result also hampers them, which is why artifacts and medallions are seen more often than the common, uncommon, and rare items.

I used Magic Items in every army I competed in last year at Gencon.
(Except for Sealed Box)
If you limit your magic items to 4 health,
Losing your 4 health of Magic items is equal to a Monster getting Buried.

Drowning in Armor:
Using Dwarves to Bring back magic items,
or a Silver Medallion.
If you are using 4 health of magic.....

Just let them go!!!
This way the army can excel within its own strengths,
instead of using up extra health as a safety net.

The Fear of losing magic items seems to be
the reason why player don't use magic items,
but if you use magic items, you will be surprised how often
they stay in the game. Cool

Athough a "Dwarve Army with a Silver Medallion"
and heavy magic items might make a fun Battlefest. Very Happy

I suspect that with the white dragons, one rare magic item could see a little bit of a renaissance-the Mithril (formerly Gold) Shield. That 24-point Jaws wouldn't look so bad if you could Bash it back. It's still a risk to carry, and not very efficient with its other faces, but it might be a shot at an effective White counter.

I’m making starter armies for each of the twelve races. I’ve included one of each regular unit (rare, uncommon and common) for each race, and added one monster for each as well. That’s a total of 34 points, so I’ve decided I want to add a rare magic item for each as well, to make everyone of them 36-point armies. I own exactly one of each of the rare items (five colors, five types). Which rare magic item and which monster should I use for each race? Can anyone give me some tips?
